Board Member to Discuss Year-Round School Proposal
Los Angeles school board member Alan Gershman has scheduled community meetings to answer questions about year-round schools and other proposals the district is considering to relieve overcrowding.
The meetings will be from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at John Burroughs Junior High School, 600 S. McCadden Place; Dec. 2 at Westchester High School, 7400 W. Manchester Ave.; Dec. 3. at Venice High School, 13000 Venice Blvd., and Dec. 4 at Emerson Junior High School, 1650 Selby Ave.
School officials say the Los Angeles Unified School District grew by more than 13,000 students this year and is expected to grow by another 57,000 over the next five years. In September, Supt. of Schools Harry Handler gave the board 10 proposals to relieve overcrowding for consideration by mid-December.
Under the year-round school option, students would be divided into groups with rotating vacations, instead of all sharing the traditional summer break.
