The Maunalani sailed into Honolulu Harbor before dawn Friday, carrying 285 refrigerated containers packed with Christmas trees.

For the 1 million residents of these tropical islands, the arrival of the Christmas tree ship is the signal that the yuletide season is here.

As soon as state agriculture inspectors check each container for insect pests--particularly the dreaded gypsy moth--the 170,000 trees will be released to retailers.

Although several smaller shipments also brought trees, the Matson Navigation Co.’s Maunalani delivered 98% of Hawaii’s supply.

While there are usually plenty of trees to go around, there is a rush to get the perfect tree.
