NCAA Division III Playoffs : Occidental Is Routed by Central of Iowa, 71-0

Craig Hagen rushed for three touchdowns Saturday to lead Central College of Iowa to a record-breaking 71-0 romp over Occidental College in a Division III quarterfinal playoff game at Pella, Iowa.

Central scored 11 touchdowns and intercepted 10 passes to advance to next Saturday’s semifinals against defending champion Augustana College (Rock Island, Ill.).

Hagen rushed for 124 yards in 19 carries to help Central (11-0) set the Division III record for largest margin of victory in a playoff game and tie for the most points scored. Central also recorded 35 first downs, and 30 first downs rushing, both Division III playoff records.

The Flying Dutchmen rushed for a school-record 460 yards and finished with 561 total yards. They held Occidental (9-2) to one yard rushing and 157 total yards.

The score would have been even more lopsided, but Central missed six extra points and a field goal.

The Flying Dutchmen marched 53 yards in seven plays for a touchdown on the opening drive of the game. They led, 32-0, at the quarter and 46-0 at the half.
