Rejuvenated Colorado Gets Freedom Bid
Colorado football Coach Bill McCartney accepted an invitation to the Freedom Bowl Saturday, capping a 7-4 season that represented a dramatic reversal from last season’s 1-10 record.
“This is the kind of reward we’d like to have at the end of every year,” McCartney said after accepting the invitation from Tom Starr, executive director of the Freedom Bowl, for his team to play Washington (6-5) on Dec. 30 at Anaheim Stadium.
“The team is excited. We’re going to have a good time and play our best game of the year.”
The invitation was extended to Colorado just after Tennessee defeated Vanderbilt, 30-0, to clinch the Southeastern Conference championship and an automatic Sugar Bowl berth.
Starr apologized for keeping Colorado on hold but said his bowl had a commitment to Tennessee if the school did not get any other bids.
McCartney said the his team will resume practice Dec. 12 and fly to California on Christmas Day.
