College Basketball Roundup : Tar Heels Overtake the Rebels

Top-ranked North Carolina got 21 points from Brad Daugherty and came from behind to defeat 16th-ranked Nevada Las Vegas, 65-60, Sunday night in the championship game of the eighth annual Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage, Alaska.

The Tar Heels (5-0) used Daugherty’s soft inside touch and Kenny Smith’s outside shooting to overcome the quickness of the Runnin’ Rebels (4-1). Daugherty was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

UNLV built a 10-point lead in the first half on the scoring of Anthony Jones, but Daugherty cut it to 34-28 at halftime with a pair of dunks.

The Tar Heels whittled away at the lead, and finally went ahead, 49-47, on a jumper by freshman Jeff Lebo.

A back-door layup by Jones tied the score again, but Steve Hale’s jumper put North Carolina ahead to stay with 6:37 left.

Jones scored 24 points and Freddie Banks had 18 for the Runnin’ Rebels. Smith finished with 16 points for Carolina.

Duke 92, Kansas 86--David Henderson scored 30 points to lead the sixth-ranked Blue Devils past the fifth-ranked Jayhawks to the championship of the inaugural Big Apple National Invitation Tournament at New York.

The Blue Devils (5-0) also got 21 points from Mark Alarie and 20 from Johnny Dawkins.

Kansas (3-1) cut Duke’s lead to 76-74 on Danny Manning’s goal with less than four minutes remaining, but Duke put the game away with a 10-2 spurt as Alarie and Dawkins each contributed four points for an 86-76.

Manning, a 6-11 sophomore, broke out of an early season slump scoring 24 points, 20 in the second half. Calvin Thompson, who made his first 10 shots and 10 of 12 overall, added 22 points and Ron Kellogg contributed 20.

Oklahoma 91, Hawaii Hilo 68--Darryl Kennedy scored 31 points and David Johnson added 23 as the Sooners routed the Vulcans at Hilo, Hawaii.

The Vulcans (1-5) kept even with the Sooners (5-0) through much of the first half, but the Sooners outscored Hilo, 16-6, in final six minutes for a 45-29 halftime lead.

St. John’s 86, Louisville 79--Walter Berry scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the 18th-ranked St. John’s Redmen knocked off the ninth-ranked Cardinals to take third place in the Big Apple NIT in New York.

St. John’s (3-1) built a 13-point lead late in the first half and led, 46-37, at halftime.

The Cardinals (2-2) rallied in the second half and three times cut the lead to one point, the last at 65-64 on Milt Wagner’s jumper. But the Redmen pulled away again, with Berry driving the length of the floor to make it 72-66.

When Louisville closed to within 78-75 with 53 seconds left, Ron Rowan sank four free throws and Mark Jackson added a pair.

Purdue 81, Arizona 74--Todd Mitchell scored 23 points and Troy Lewis added 22 as the Boilermakers beat the Wildcats to finish third in the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage, Alaska.

Purdue (3-1) was in command all the way against Arizona (1-2), which appeared to sag during the first half after a one-point loss to Nevada Las Vegas Saturday night. The Boilermakers led, 41-28, at halftime.

Steve Kerr scored 19 points for Arizona and Elliott added 14.

Villanova 71, Alaska Anchorage 59--Harold Pressley scored 17 points the Wildcats took fifth place in the Great Alaska Shootout with a victory over the Seawolves.

The defending NCAA champion Wildcats (4-2) raced to a 38-24 halftime lead against the Seawolves (3-2), who upset Missouri on Saturday, and coasted in the second half.

Virginia 79, Virginia Commonwealth 75--Guard Tom Calloway scored 22 points, including a key three-point play with 19 seconds remaining in regulation, and the Cavaliers rallied to beat the Rams in overtime in the championship game of the United Virginia Bank Invitational at Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia (3-0) also got 18 points from Tom Sheehey and 15 from Olden Polynice in winning its own tournament for the ninth time in as many tries. Nicky Jones had 24 points for the Rams (1-1).

Arkansas 68, SW Missouri 67--Center Andrew Lang tipped in Mike Ratliff’s missed free throw with 20 seconds left to lift the Razorbacks past the the Bears at Fayetteville, Ark.
