College Basketball Roundup : Alford Scores 32 as Indiana Beats Notre Dame, 82-67

Steve Alford, a junior guard, matched his career high with 32 points, including 16 during a 22-8 spurt, to lead 19th-ranked Indiana to a 82-67 victory over the No. 10 Irish at Bloomington, Ind., Tuesday night.

About Alford, Notre Dame Coach Digger Phelps said: “He’s among the best players in the country, especially when he’s on, and he was on tonight.”

The Irish (2-1) were led by David Rivers with 18 points. Winston Morgan scored 15 for the Hoosiers (2-0).

Georgetown 75, George Mason 63--Ralph Dalton scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the No. 6-ranked Hoyas at Fairfax, Va. The victory was the 300th for Georgetown Coach John Thompson.

Thompson, who has lost only 107 during his 14 years at Georgetown, said he was unaware he was going for his 300th victory until a friend informed him earlier in the day.

Reggie Williams and David Wingate each scored 17 for Georgetown (3-0). Williams also pulled down 11 rebounds. Ricky Wilson paced George Mason (2-2) with 19 points.

Kansas 86, Southern Illinois Edwardsville 81--After the seventh-ranked Jayhawks won at Lawrence, Kan., Kansas Coach Larry Brown held a practice session.

“I’ve never done it before, but I’ve heard of a lot of coaches who have,” Brown said.

Forward Archie Marshall came off the bench to score 18 points for Kansas (4-1). Kenny Stanley scored 18 for Edwardsville (1-1), a Division II school.

Ohio State 80, Florida 73--Dennis Hopson, a 6-5 junior guard who played forward last season, scored a career-high 34 points as the Buckeyes (3-0) won at Columbus, Ohio. Forward Brad Sellers, a 7-foot senior, added 27. Hopson made 8 of 9 shots in the second half.

Vernon Maxwell, a 6-4 sophomore, led the Gators (2-1) with 28 points.

Kentucky 84, Cincinnati 54--Kenny Walker scored 26 points, including 10 in a 19-2 first-half spurt and nine in a 21-2 second-half run, to lead the ninth-ranked Wildcats to victory at Lexington, Ken.

Kentucky, which plays Indiana at Lexington Saturday, is 4-0. Cincinnati is 1-2.

Auburn 85, West Virginia 59--Freshman Michael Jones came off the bench in relief of star Chuck Person to score 14 points in nine minutes, and Frank Ford held West Virginia ace Dale Blaney to only six points as the 19th-ranked Tigers won at Auburn, Ala.

Jones finished with 18 points for the Tigers (2-1). Renaldo Brown scored 20 for the Mountaineers (2-2).

New Mexico 132, USIU 95--Johnny Brown scored 31 points and New Mexico set a school scoring record in its blitz of U.S. International at Albuquerque, N.M. The previous high for the Lobos was 128 points scored in 1979. New Mexico (5-0) shot 68%.

The Gulls (1-2) were led by Joe Yezbak with 32 points.

San Jose State 76, USF 55--Reggie Owens and Ricky Berry each scored 20 points and Owens collected 16 rebounds as the Spartans (3-1) beat the University of San Francisco (4-1) at San Jose.

Washington 75, St. Mary’s 54--Center Chris Welp, a 7-foot junior, had 23 points and 6 six rebounds to lead the Huskies (2-2) at Moraga, Calif. Paul Fortier, a 6-9 senior, added 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. The Gaels are 3-2.

Arizona State 83, Denver 65--Sophomore forward Chris Sandle scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half as the Sun Devils (3-0) won at Tempe, Ariz.

California 74, UC Davis 51--Leonard Taylor scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Bears (2-1) at Berkeley. Davis is 3-2.

Fresno State 61, Wichita State 51--Senior center Brian Salone scored 17 points, including nine in the final seven minutes, to lead the Bulldogs (3-1) at Fresno.

Arkansas 76, San Diego State 64--William Mills scored 20 points, Byron Irvin had a season-high 19 and Scott Rose made big plays down the stretch as Arkansas won at Little Rock, Ark. Arkansas is 4-0; San Diego State 0-3.

Purdue 82, San Francisco State 70--Freshman Melvin McCants had 22 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Boilermakers (6-0) at West Lafayette, Ind.

Memphis State 83, Kent State 69--Junior center William Bedford scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as 13th-ranked Tigers (3-0) won at Memphis.

Maryland 74, Fairleigh Dickinson 51--Len Bias made 10 of 11 field-goal attempts and scored 24 points before leaving with an eye injury in the second half, leading the Terrapins (3-1) to victory at College Park, Md.

St. John’s 85, Wagner 55--Walter Berry scored 25 points and pulled down 20 rebounds to lead the Redmen (4-1) at New York.

Iowa 55, Drake 43--Freshman Roy Marble scored 15 points and Bill Jones added 7 in the last five minutes as the Hawkeyes (5-0) won at Des Moines, Iowa.
