High Surf Advisory Extended; Boy, 13, Rescued in Coronado
The National Weather Service said a heavy surf advisory would remain in effect at least through today, as breakers of up to 12 feet were expected to continue their assault on San Diego County beaches. A Weather Service spokesman said the large waves probably would not subside until Friday.
In Coronado, a 13-year-old surfer had to be plucked from the surf Wednesday by a team using the Sheriff Department’s Astrea helicopter.
A sheriff’s spokesman said Jeremiah Russell, of Coronado, was unable to fight his way through the heavy surf to the beach just west of the Hotel del Coronado.
Deputies on the helicopter lifted Russell, who was uninjured, to safety and even saved his surfboard.
The Weather Service spokesman said the ocean probably would be whipped up by a storm off the California coast, which was expected to hit the area late today.
Less than one inch of rain was predicted for San Diego County, and clearing skies were forecast for Friday.
