Helena Hawkins, wife of escaped murderer James Hawkins Jr,, told KNBC-TV she was “sure” her 41-year-old husband, who escaped with two others Thanksgiving Eve from an interview room in the downtown Criminal Courthouse, has left the United States. However, other members of the prominent South Los Angeles Hawkins family say they believe the convicted killer of a reputed street gang member is still either in the city or state. Hawkins’ wife told KNBC that her husband is “neither in Northern or Southern California.” Asked whether she knew for certain that Hawkins had left the country, she said, “Yes. He’s not in the U.S.” She said her husband is “clever enough” to avoid capture. Also at large is Jesus Gonzalez, 24. Richard Bullock, 25, was caught.
