Lee Trevino shot his second successive three-under-par 69 Friday for a 138 and a one-stroke lead over Lanny Wadkins and Bernhard Langer of West Germany midway through the Million Dollar Golf Challenge at Sun City, South Africa.

Wadkins, the U.S. Player of the Year, also shot a 69, and Langer, the 1985 Masters champion, had a 70 to end the second round at 139 in the elite 10-man competition for a top prize of $300,000.

The $125,000 women’s competition, introduced this year, was essentially a two-player race. Patti Rizzo held the lead after her second-round 71 for a 143 total, just ahead of Muffin Spencer-Devlin, who shot a 69 for a 144.

Larry and Laurie Rinker overcame blustery winds to take a one-shot lead after two rounds of the $600,000 Mixed Team tournament at Largo, Fla.

The brother-sister combination, starting at the 10th tee, birdied their first hole and added three more birdies on the front nine to finish with a four-under-par 68 for a total of 134 on the 6,957-yard Bardmoor Course.

Tied for second place at 135 were Al Geiberger and Patty Sheehan, and Mark McCumber and Chris Johnson. Each team followed an opening 66 with a 69.

Kris Neiman of San Jose, 2 down after 12 holes, played subpar golf the rest of the way and beat Malibu’s Cindy Scholefield, the tournament medalist, on the 19th hole of their quarterfinal match in the 19th State Women’s Amateur championship at the Pebble Beach Golf Links on the Monterey Peninsula.

Neiman will face two-time champion Pat Cornett of Greenbrae in today’s semifinals. The other semifinalists are Shelly Rule, 24, of Indian Wells and Anne Sander, 48, of Pauma Valley.
