Darryl Lattimore and Loren Ross will be the only defending champions competing in 1985 USA-Budweiser Boxing Championships, which open today at Tulsa Convention Center.

A total of 223 amateur boxers representing 18 regions will participate.

Lattimore, of Washington, will be trying for his second straight 147-pound class title. Ross, of the U.S. Army at Fort Hood, Texas, will be trying for another 178-pound class championship.

James Harris of Washington, the 1984 106-pound champion, is recovering from injuries suffered in an auto accident. Eugene Speed of Washington, 119, turned pro last June.

Reasons for the absence of the other eight 1984 winners are medical suspensions and defeats in regional tournaments. Also, some are resting up from the recent World Cup competition at Seoul, South Korea.

This tournament, which ends next Saturday, will not figure in the makeup of the U.S. team or the world championships next May at Reno, Nev.

The makeup of that team will be determined at the 1986 U.S. championships, which will be held from March 1 through April 5 at Beaumont, Texas.
