Glendale 30, Taft 24--Glendale College quarterback Rob Huffman would just as soon forget his performance at the start of the Potato Bowl game at Bakersfield.

He will, however, remember the finish.

Huffman, who was replaced early in the game after a poor start, came off the bench to direct a pair of fourth-quarter scoring drives as Glendale rallied for a victory over Taft College before 5,000 at Memorial Stadium.

With the victory, Glendale, ranked seventh in the state, finished at 10-1. Taft, playing in its seventh straight Potato Bowl, finished 7-2-1.

Huffman, who was replaced by Gary Lotka in the second quarter, came off the bench in time to direct the tying and winning drives.

With the Vaqueros trailing, 24-17, Huffman drove the team 79 yards in seven plays to tie the game at 24-24. Huffman capped the drive with a one-yard plunge.

Glendale went for the win, and appeared to have it when Huffman completed a two-point conversion pass to Dan Waters. But a holding call nullified the play, and the Vaqueros settled for a tie on Ken Arlt’s extra point.

Glendale got the ball back with just over four minutes left at its 16. Three plays later, on a third and five from the Vaquero 36, Huffman passed 16 yards to Doug Hooker for a first down that kept the drive alive.

Five plays later, Huffman hit Jeff Jackson between defenders for a 32-yard, game-winning touchdown with 28 seconds remaining.
