A Garden Grove man surrendered to police early Sunday, a little more than an hour after a car struck a 16-year-old girl on Beach Boulevard near Knott’s Berry Farm, critically injuring her.

Buena Park police said the girl, a Lakewood resident who was not identified because of her age, ran out into the street in front of the amusement park at 12:20 a.m. as her friends warned her of an oncoming car.

She was struck by the southbound automobile and suffered severe head and chest injuries, while the car continued on, police said.

Joseph Patrick Colombo, 25, turned himself in to La Palma police about 2 a.m. on the advice of his attorney, police said. They turned him over to Buena Park authorities. Colombo, who, police said, showed no signs of intoxication, was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident and later was freed on $10,000 bond.

The girl was reported in critical condition at UCI Medical Center.
