Juventus of Turin, the reigning Italian and European champion, won the Toyota Cup, soccer’s world club championship, 4-2 on penalty kicks over Argentinos Juniors, the reigning Argentine and South American champion, before a sellout crowd of 62,000 at Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium.

The teams were tied, 2-2, after 90 minutes of regulation play and a 30-minute overtime before Juventus, which won the European Cup, 1-0 against Liverpool last May in a match marred by fan violence that left 39 dead, successfully made four of five penalty kicks while Argentinos managed only two.

Juventus became the first European team to win the Toyota Cup, inaugurated in 1980 when the home-and-away competition between the champions of Europe and South America was altered to a one-match contest in neutral Japan.
