A Northridge man shot himself in the chest Tuesday morning after two Los Angeles County marshals attempted to serve a warrant for his arrest, authorities said.

John Albers, 20, was in critical condition at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.

Alber was wanted for failing to appear in Ventura Municipal Court Oct. 8 on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, court officials said. Albers had two previous convictions for drunk driving and faced a mandatory jail sentence if convicted, court officials said.

Marshals went to Albers’ house about 6 a.m. and told a woman who answered the door about the warrant, Cmdr. Clyde Gatlin said.

While the woman, who was not identified, and marshals stood at the door, they heard a shot.

Albers had been shot with a .22-caliber rifle, Gatlin said.
