Anaheim : New Year’s Eve Copter Ride Idea Shot Down

To give teen-agers something “far more exciting” than parties and drinking on New Year’s Eve, the Grace Baptist Church planned to offer free helicopter rides on Dec. 31.

On Tuesday, however, City Council members--expressing their regrets--shot down the idea.

The proposal required a conditional use permit, but city staff members said they would recommend against such a permit because homes are within 200 feet of the church.

To give the church an exception would “open a Pandora’s box” and leave the city liable should any mishap occur, Mayor Pro Tem Irv Pickler told Frank Morgan, church activities director.

Morgan said the church planned on holding a “large service” followed by helicopter rides at the church, 2530 W. La Palma Ave. The flights, which would have been held between 8:30 and 10:30 p.m., had the approval of neighboring residents and would have provided teen-agers with a supervised program, Morgan said.
