Ex-Hoover Star Drafted First
Eddie Williams, a former local prep baseball star and No. 1 draft pick of the New York Mets in 1983, was the first player chosen in the major league draft held Tuesday in San Diego.
The Cleveland Indians selected Williams off the roster of Denver, the AAA farm club of the Cincinnati Reds. Williams played third base and outfield in 119 games last season with Cedar Rapids of the Midwest League.
Williams, 21, was picked as San Diego Section player of the year in 1983 after leading Hoover High School to the 2-A championship. He was chosen by the Mets in the first round of the 1983 amateur draft, and was traded to Cincinnati for Jay Tibbs in 1984.
