Long Beach : Children’s Museum Opens

After three years of planning and fund raising, Long Beach Children’s Museum has opened temporary quarters in Marina Pacifica Mall. The 2,200-square-foot site, on the upper floor of the mall, was donated for six months by American Home Properties, which owns the mall.

The museum has more than a dozen exhibits, including a dress-up corner, science exhibits, blocks and mirrors to please toddlers, and a make-believe optometrist’s office, said Sally Sherlock, museum president.

Eventually, the Long Beach Children’s Museum Committee expects to attract enough support to open a 27,000-square-foot museum in its own building, Sherlock said. The committee has raised about $5,000 so far, and received many donated supplies and professional services, she said.

The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday at the mall, 6336 E. Pacific Coast Highway.

During its first three days, about 2,500 children toured the exhibits, Sherlock said. Admission is free.
