Maywood : Alcohol-Sales Permit OKd
The City Council Tuesday approved a conditional use permit for a proposed AM-PM Mini Market to sell beer and wine despite an earlier protest by church members and a letter of protest from an elementary school principal. The permit was approved 4-1, with Councilman Thomas Engle dissenting.
The Rev. Gerald Brooks, senior pastor at Church of the Nazarene in Maywood, and church members have protested the granting of beer and wine sales requested by Atlantic Richfield Co. for the proposed market at 4700 E. Slauson Ave., within 1,000 feet of the church. The Planning Commission approved the permit 4-0 in November.
A letter of protest from Kenneth Miller, the principal of Heliotrope Elementary School, was read to the council. Miller objected to the permit because the proposed store is also near the school. Ronald Lindsey, city director of planning and development, said the school is more than 600 feet away.
The permit is the fourth granted by the city since it passed an urgency ordinance last December against the establishment of alcohol-dispensing businesses without a conditional use permit. The ordinance was extended for one year in November to give planning staff time to develop a permanent ordinance.
