Pedestrian Injured Critically in Accident
A 72-year-old woman was in critical condition Wednesday after being hit by a car while crossing East Coast Highway in Corona del Mar, authorities said.
Newport Beach police said the accident occurred at 3:45 p.m. while Margaret Thielemeir of Corona del Mar was walking in a crosswalk at Larkspur Avenue.
Witnesses said a driver westbound in the left lane stopped at the crosswalk for her and that a second driver westbound in the right lane slowed in preparation to stop, police reported. They said a third driver came up behind the first car, then cut in front of the second vehicle. The third car sped into the crosswalk, striking Thielemeir, who was thrown onto the windshield.
Thielemeir was treated by paramedics and taken to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, where she was reported in critical condition.
Police are investigating.
