Golfers Need Thick Skins to Survive These Attacks
Bill Shirley writes: “Palmer and Nicklaus have been going at it on some of the planet’s choicest pieces of real estate for 30 years. Seldom have two athletes of such stature battled one another for so long.”
Athletes? Athletes ? When are these fatuous sportswriters, who are so in love with the game (not sport) of golf going to finally wise up and be objective enough to acknowledge that golfers are not athletes.
A golfer is no more an athlete than a bowler, a billiards player, a chess player or a tiddlywinks player. Every time a golfer is referred to as an athlete, it is a gross insult to genuine athletes such as those who participate in football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, swimming and track and field.
Please! Knock it off!
