Tennis Roundup : 2 Unseeded U.S. Players Gain Semifinal Round at Sydney

Two unseeded Americans, Mark Dickson and Matt Anger, advanced Friday to the semifinals of the $145,000 New South Wales Open tennis tournament at Sydney, Australia.

Dickson, of Tampa, Fla., upset Tim Mayotte, the No. 2-seeded player, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. The victory moved him into the semifinals against another unseeded player, Kelly Evernden of New Zealand.

The 35th-ranked Anger, of Pleasanton, Calif., defeated Bud Schultz, 6-3, 6-3. Anger will play fifth-seeded Henri Leconte of France in the other semifinal. Leconte ended Australian Wally Masur’s hopes, 6-4, 6-3.

At Tokyo, top-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany needed only 49 minutes to beat unseeded American Grace Kim, 6-1, 6-1, and advance to the semifinals of the Pan Pacific Open.

Kohde-Kilsch, ranked fifth in the world, will meet Bonnie Gadusek, ranked 12th, in the semifinals today. Gadusek powered past Carling Bassett of Canada, 6-3, 6-2, in a one-hour match, during which umpire Lee Jackson warned Gadusek for saying an obscenity.

Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria, ranked eighth in the world, double-faulted twice in the eighth game of the second set but scored well with ground strokes to beat Annabel Croft of Britain, 6-2, 6-2.

Maleeva will face Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, the world’s ninth-ranked player, in the semifinals. Sukova breezed past Stephanie Rehe, 6-4, 6-4, after breaking Rehe’s service three times.
