MAME Awards Cite Marketing Excellence

MAME Awards, citations for major achievements in merchandising excellence within the Southland home building industry, were announced at the 12th annual black-tie banquet of the Sales & Marketing Council of the Building Industry Assn. of Southern California.

The three grand award winners for housing projects that ranged in average home prices from just under $120,000 to over $175,000 were Casablanca, McKellar Development in Rancho Penasquitos; Windrose Series, Buie Corp./Sun S&L;/Nevada S&L; project in Laguna Niguel; and The Colony at Mandalay Beach, Oxnard, Bergeer Co./Raznick and Sons.

In the MAME Awards story, which ran Dec. 15, three persons were listed as winners in the Salespersons of the Year category. Actually, there were three nominees, but only one winner, Lu Paglia of Marlborough Development Co.

In the listing of winners of the annual MAME Awards, sponsored by the Sales & Marketing Council of the Building Industry Assn. of Southern California, the winner for “Best Overall Public Relations Campaign for a Master-Planned Community” was omitted. It was The Colony at Mandalay Beach, a project of Bergheer Co./Raznick & Sons with public relations by Bryan Hardwick & Associates. Ewing Co. of Costa Mesa designed the entry sign for the project, which also won in the “Best Entry Monument Sign” category.

Gary Campbell, president of HOMES FOR SALE magazine, won the Max Tipton Memorial Award, given to a marketing professional who has helped the industry achieve greater credibility and professionalism.

Anaheim’s Disneyland Hotel was the scene of the MAME 1985 event, attended by nearly 950, where individuals and marketing, landscaping, advertising, public relations, sales office planners and graphics design firms were honored for their efforts in the sale of housing. A total of 489 entries competed in the various categories.

Triple winners of awards from among advertising/public relations firms were the Roxburgh Agency, Santa Ana and Bryan Hardwick & Associates, Palos Verdes Estates while King Advertising & Public Relations, Newport Beach, was a double winner.

Other double winners were the Peridian Group, Gerald Gardner & Associates, POD, Land Concern, in landscaping; Ted Hansen Design and Motivational Systems, for brochure and display designs, respectively; and Yeiser-Garland, interiors.

Bayne Sparks, last year’s recipient of the Tipton award, noted that Campbell was instrumental in starting both the San Diego and Los Angeles/Ventura/Santa Barbara Sales & Marketing Councils, was 1982 president of the Southern California Sales and Marketing Council and was voted the “Industry Leader of the Year” in 1984 by the San Diego council.

Other honorees were Valerie van de Zilver, of CenTrust Mortgage Corp. and co-chairperson of the MAME 85 Awards, the President’s Award; Bruce Romjue, Sunrise Corp., Marketing Manager of the Year; John Horner, William Lyon Co., Sales Manager of the Year; and Lu Paglia, Marlboro Development Co., Dave Lopez, Signature Homes, and Kay Elliot, Baldwin Co., as Sales Persons of the Year at their respective firm’s Marlboro Villas, Chino Estates and Spyglass; and Eleanor McCune and Ray Locascio, Great Western Real Estate, won the sales team award for Lewis Homes’ Orangewood Las Flores project.
