Fire destroyed a bungalow used as a day-care center for the children of San Diego High School students, a spokesman for the Fire Department said Sunday.

The cause of the afternoon fire remained undetermined, spokesman Larry Stewart said. However, he said the Metro Arson Strike Team termed the blaze “suspicious,” and there appeared to have been a break-in.

Stewart said the wood-frame building has been broken into by transients in the past because food is stored there.

According to Stewart, an “intrusion alarm” on Sunday drew school security officials to the building, in the 1800 block of Park Boulevard. When they saw smoke, they summoned firefighters, who brought the fire under control shortly before 2 p.m.

No one was reported injured. Stewart said the tentative estimate of damage is $200,000.
