College Basketball : LSU (8-0) Trips Up Lamar, 74-57

Consistency was the key for LSU Monday night as the undefeated Tigers rolled to a 74-57 victory over Lamar behind a 19-point performance by 6-6 senior guard Don Redden.

“This was our most consistent performance of the year,” LSU Coach Dale Brown said after the game before a record crowd of 9,432 at Lamar’s Montagne Center in Beaumont, Tex.

Forward John Williams and Nikita Wilson scored 16 and 11 points, respectively, for LSU (8-0). Williams also grabbed 13 rebounds as LSU outrebounded the Cardinals, 44-39.

James Gulley and James Nance each had 17 points for Lamar (5-2).

Fresno State 75, Mankato State 57--Fresno State freshman Mike Mitchell scored 14 points and four teammates scored in double figures as the Bulldogs (5-2) won at Fresno. The Division II Mavericks from Minnesota fell to 4-5.

Alabama 100, Florida St. 89--Buck Johnson scored 23 points, leading five Alabama players in double figures, as the unbeaten Crimson Tide held off Florida State at Birmingham, Ala. It was Alabama’s 1000thvictory, the 35th school to have won as many.

The Crimson Tide (6-0) shot 62%. Pee Wee Barber led Florida State (4-2) with 23 points.

Iowa State 95, South Dakota 58--Jeff Grayer scored 23 points and Gary Thompkins added 18 to lead Iowa State (7-1) at Ames, Iowa. South Dakota is 4-2.

So. Mississippi 106, Tennessee Tech 93--At Hattiesburg, Miss., Tennessee Tech shot 66.7% but had 28 turnovers in losing to the Golden Eagles (6-0). John White had a career-high 20 points for Southern Mississippi, while freshman guard Anthony Avery led Tennessee Tech with a career-high 27.

New Orleans 84, Oregon Tech 70--Transfer Ronnie Grandison, formerly of Tulane and St. Bernard in Playa del Rey Tulane, contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the University of New Orleans (4-0) over Oregon Tech at New Orleans. Oregon Tech is 8-4.

Missouri 72, So. Illinois 44--Derrick Chievous scored 17 points and Dan Bingenheimer added 15 as Missouri (7-3) won at Columbia, Mo.

Clemson 89, Baptist 63--Larry Middleton scored 22 points and Horace Grant contributed 16 points and 15 rebounds to lead Clemson (8-0) over Baptist (4-5) at Clemon, S.C.

Nevada Reno 92, Santa Clara 61--Guard Rob Harden scored 25 points, with all 12 of his field goals from the 20-foot range, to lead Nevada Reno (2-6) over Santa Clara (2-6) at Reno.
