College Basketball Roundup : Third-Ranked Duke Remains Unbeaten

Mark Alarie scored 13 points, and freshman Danny Ferry added 12 as unbeaten and third-ranked Duke took advantage of 16 second-half turnovers to defeat Davidson, 69-52, Wednesday night at Charlotte, N.C.

Duke (9-0) built a 16-point lead in the opening minutes at 24-8, but the Wildcats cut the margin to 33-25 by intermission.

The Blue Devils then outscored Davidson, 20-9, in the first nine minutes of the second half to take a 19-point lead.

Davidson (5-2) was led by Jeff Himes with 11 points and Ken Niebuhr with 10.

Georgetown 83, American 59--David Wingate scored 14 points, and Michael Jackson, Reggie Williams and Horace Broadnax each added 12 as the fifth-ranked Hoyas overwhelmed their crosstown rivals at Landover, Md.

Georgetown (7-0) took command of the game in the second half, outscoring the Eagles, 20-2, in a 6 1/2-minute span to widen a 39-36 lead to 59-38 with 11:10 left.

American (5-1) was led by Frank Ross with 23 points.

The victory extended Georgetown’s winning streak against nonconference opponents to 36 overall. The last team outside of the Big East to defeat the Hoyas was DePaul, 63-61, in December 1983.

The 18th-ranked Blue Demons will get a chance to repeat the feat Saturday when the teams meet at DePaul.

Louisville 65, Indiana 63--Led by senior guard Milt Wagner with 22 points, the 17th-ranked Cardinals edged the 16th-ranked Hoosiers at Louisville, Ky.

With neither team able to hang on to a lead midway through the second half, Wagner took charge and had six points in an 8-0 Louisville run that put the Cardinals ahead for good at 52-47 with 7:03 left.

“He made the difference in the ball game, scoring and hitting those free throws down the stretch,” Indiana Coach Bob Knight said.

The victory improved Louisville’s record to 6-2, while Indiana, which got 27 points from junior guard Steve Alford, dropped to 5-2.

Clemson 100, Georgia State 60--Horace Grant scored 21 points and pulled down 20 rebounds to lead the Tigers to a lopsided victory at Clemson, S.C.

Grant became the first Clemson player to record more than 20 points and 20 rebounds in the same game since Tree Rollins had 22 points and 23 rebounds against Maryland in January 1977.

Clemson (9-0) tied a school record for consecutive victories at the beginning of a season. The 1978-79 and 1934-35 teams also won their first nine games.

Georgia State was led by James Andrews with 16 points.

Providence 109, Holy Cross 78--Don Brown scored 18 points at Providence, R.I., as the Friars (6-1) won their sixth straight game.

Eldridge Carter and Grant Evans, both freshmen, came off the bench to contribute 15 points each for Holy Cross (3-2).

Arkansas 87, Alabama State 69--Junior forward William Mills hit 24 points as the Razorbacks won at Little Rock, Ark.

Arkansas (7-1) got a scare when the Hornets came out with a full-court press after halftime, closing within three points, but then Mills and reserve forward Eric Poerschke started hitting, and Arkansas went up by as many as 20 points with just under five minutes left in the game. Poerschke’s 14 points was a career high.

Alabama State (4-1) was paced by forward Frank Sillman with 20 points.
