Two people remained hospitalized in serious condition Thursday following a shoot-out during an attempted residential robbery in Westminster.

The gun battle erupted, police said, when an armed man attempted to rob three people in an apartment at 7661 Trask Ave. about 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said a man identified as Daniel E. Gallo, 28, of Santa Ana broke into the living room of Cathy Johnson, 29, and William Matthews, 39, armed with a .22-caliber, semiautomatic pistol.

Matthews told officers that he was in another part of the apartment and, when he heard the commotion, armed himself with a .45-caliber pistol to confront the intruder.

Numerous shots were fired, police said, before the man fled. Gallo was found later at a nearby service station suffering from gunshot wounds.

Johnson was reported in serious condition Thursday at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, while Gallo was also in serious condition at the jail ward of UCI Medical Center, where he is being held on suspicion of attempted robbery and attempted murder.

Matthews and William French, 42, of Whittier, a visitor at the couple’s apartment, were treated for minor wounds and released.
