The company, whose principals are William E. Franke and John B. Prentis, both of St. Louis, reportedly offered to buy the St. Louis Globe-Democrat for $500,000 and pledged to put $5 million in working capital into the paper. The paper suspended publication Dec. 7 after a federal bankruptcy judge appointed Edwin F. Jones operating trustee of the paper. The offer, which must be approved by the bankruptcy court, is subject to Veritas reaching agreements with the St. Louis Newspaper Guild and other key parties.
