Roy Chipman said the University of Pittsburgh’s entry into the Big East Conference in 1982 led to “burnout or whatever you want to call it” that forced his resignation as basketball coach earlier this week.

Pitt’s program was “like a child, and it has now reached the point where you can’t stand the child anymore,” he said.

Chipman also said the allegations that a Pitt alumnus offered former Altoona (Pa.) High School star Doug West $10,000 to play for the Panthers has left him weary.

“You know what the nice part is? I don’t care anymore,” Chipman said. “I don’t care what the newspapers say. I don’t care what the NCAA says. I don’t care what the fans say.”
