NHL Roundup : LaFontaine, Islanders Beat Whalers

Center Pat LaFontaine scored two goals and Kelly Hrudey stopped 43 shots to lead the New York Islanders to a 6-3 victory over the Hartford Whalers Monday night at Hartford.

LaFontaine scored his 19th and 20th goals of the season including a first-period power play score that snapped a 1-1 tie and pushed the Islanders into the lead to stay.

N.Y. Rangers 10, Detroit 2--Brian MacLellan and Mark Pavelich with two goals each led the Rangers’ rout that saddled the Red Wings with their second eight-game losing streak of the season and extended their record at Madison Square Garden to 1-13-2 in their last 16 appearances.

Vancouver 5, Winnipeg 3--Moe Lemay scored two goals, helping the Canucks produce five first-period goals at Vancouver.

The victory lifted Vancouver into sole possession of third place in the Smythe Division with 30 points, two ahead of the Jets and 10 ahead of the last last-place Kings.
