While visiting his mother in an East Los Angeles senior citizens’ complex, a man in his 20s started slashing her with a knife and was later shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies when he advanced on them with the weapon, deputies said. The dead man, Ruben Torres, refused to heed warnings to drop the knife as his moved toward the deputies, a sheriff’s spokesman said. His mother, Carmen Berichemer, 65, a resident of the Fairmount Terrace Apartments, was treated at Santa Marta Hospital for cuts and bruises. It was not known what touched off the attack.
