A malfunctioning bearing in a water coolant pump will keep the San Onofre nuclear power plant off line until mid-January, authorities said. David Barron, spokesman for Southern California Edison, said it will take about two weeks to replace the bearing. Unit 3 at the San Diego County plant was shut down Sept. 14 for routine refueling and maintenance. Chronic leaks were found in seals used in the cooling pumps, which a spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said are not part of the nuclear system or related to safety. Barron said the seals were wearing out faster than expected.
