Fire broke out deep within the Shoemaker coal mine in Moundsville, W. Va., but all underground workers managed to escape without injury, Consolidated Coal Co. officials said. Workers extinguished the fire about 5 1/2 hours after it started from an unknown cause. Forty-six miners preparing for Monday’s work were underground when the fire broke out.
