S.F. Police Chief to Retire

SAN FRANCISCO —
Police Chief Cornelius Murphy will retire Jan. 16 after six years in office, Mayor Dianne Feinstein announced today.
Feinstein recommended to the Police Commission that Commander Frank Jordan be appointed to replace the outgoing chief. Murphy, 56, began his career with the Police Department in 1952 as a patrolman. He served as an inspector, sergeant, lieutenant, captain and commander before being named chief in 1980.
