Bernheimer's annual listing of awards failed to acknowledge a remarkable achievement of 1985: The Comeback of the Year Award due the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra.
On Nov. 23, when the Long Beach Symphony returned to the stage of the Terrace Theater, 3,000 concertgoers celebrated both the return of fine music to Long Beach and the dedication of a community that refused to let its orchestra die.
Exactly one year earlier, the Symphony had been silenced by continuing debts after only two performances of its 50th season. Its return was a fitting tribute to the artists and to the community that supports its orchestra.
