Excellent Good Fair Poor : VIDEOCASSETTES

Compiled by Terry Atkinson

“An Evening With the Royal Ballet.” MCA. $29.95. Released in 1965, this 87-minute feature documents a golden age in British classicism: Margot Fonteyn and Rudolph Nureyev in Fokine’s “Les Sylphides” and the pas de deux from “Le Corsaire” (here attributed to Nureyev); Fonteyn, David Blair, Antoinette Sibley, Merle Park and other worthies in Act III of Petipa’s “Sleeping Beauty”; the ensemble in Ashton’s “La Valse.” Unfortunately, the two ballets filmed by Anthony Asquith are ruinously shot--with the Bluebird’s batterie cropped out of frame, for instance--so the film can’t be recommended. 1/2
