A Cuban immigrant was sentenced in Los Angeles federal court to 15 years in prison on illegal weapons charges. Albert Mauricio Rodriguez, 45, of Rosemead was found guilty in November of conspiring to assault federal agents and to possess an unlawful firearm, carrying a firearm during a crime of violence and possession of an unlawful silencer. Assistant U.S. Atty. Charles J. Stevens said Rodriguez was arrested when he and two associates tried to sell cocaine for $192,000 to federal undercover agents. U.S. District Judge Laughlin E. Waters added five years to the sentence because of a recently enacted law that requires a five-year term without the possibility of parole for carrying a firearm during a crime of violence.
