A Navy pilot aboard the aircraft carrier Enterprise was killed and a crewman was critically injured when an F-14 jet fighter seat inadvertently ejected while the two were attempting to deplane. Lt. Joe D. Durmon, 34, and his radio officer, Lt. (j.g.) Stephen P. Engeman, 28, had safely landed on the carrier 70 miles west of San Luis Obispo Bay, said Lt. John Semcken, a Navy spokesman. Durmon died at the scene, while Engeman was helicoptered to UCLA Medical Center, where he was in critical condition.
