Culver City : Sewage Facility Expansion
The Culver City Planning Commission has approved a variance to allow the city of Los Angeles to expand its Jackson Avenue sewage overflow facility. Excess sewage spills through the gate at the east end of Jackson Avenue into Ballona Creek, which flows into the ocean at Playa del Rey.
A series of spills dumped more than a million gallons of raw sewage into the creek last year.
The variance will allow the Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation to install four holding tanks with a 1-million gallon capacity. Los Angeles officials said they hope the tanks will eliminate spills, but a chlorination facility will also be built to treat sewage that does spill. Los Angeles officials hope to begin work on the $4-million project by next month.
The variance request will not be heard by the City Council of Culver City unless an appeal is filed.
