Spain Envoys Kidnaped in Beirut
Gunmen kidnaped three Spanish diplomats on the road from Beirut airport today, hours after Spain became the last Western European nation to establish diplomatic relations with Israel.
Police said the gunmen intercepted a convoy of two Spanish Embassy cars carrying seven diplomats as they headed from the airport into mostly Muslim West Beirut. They said the gunmen forced three of the diplomats into another vehicle and sped off. The remaining four called for help and were later escorted by Lebanese soldiers to the Spanish Embassy.
