Proper Name for City of Angels

I find it sad (not to say a bit frightening!) that Steven Kraim in his letter (Jan. 9) must spend his time worrying about the damage caused by those who refer to our sunny city as L.A. rather than Los Angeles. Unfortunately, this is just the view that allows outsiders to create the stereotyped Los Angeles resident as one who is shallow and image-minded.

There are far too many important things for Angelenos to concern themselves with these days. I am stunned and consistently saddened by the visible plight of what appears to be an ever-growing number of homeless people who live in and continue to flock to our city.

Angelenos are also faced with the reality of increased gang violence, psychopathic serial killers and the erection of power plants that threaten our health and ruin L.A.’s greatest asset, its scenic beauty.

I think we can create a true pride in our city by never hesitating to strive for an improved quality of life for all residents of Los Angeles. In my eyes, if Los Angeles is gaining notoriety through the catchy verse, “I Love L.A.,” all the better. Hail to Randy Newman and all who spread the word!
