San Clemente attorney William R. Froeberg was given a gubernatorial appointment Friday to the central Orange County Municipal Court.

Froeberg, 36, a south Orange County lawyer whose wife, Julie, is chief of staff for Republican state Sen. Marian Bergeson of Newport Beach, replaces Judge Eugene C. Langhauser, who retired.

Froeberg said he learned Thursday that Gov. George Deukmejian had chosen him for a judgeship. He said he applied for a judicial appointment several years ago but that “it is always a surprise.”

“The way the system works, you never know if you are seriously being considered or if you are not seriously being considered,” he said.

Froeberg said the presiding judge of the Santa Ana-based court was out of town and that he has no indication how soon he will be sworn in or when he will assume his duties.

For the past three years, Froeberg has served periodically as an acting judge in the south Orange County Municipal Court, based in Laguna Niguel, hearing traffic, small claims and minor civil matters.

A former president of the Capistrano Beach Chamber of Commerce, he has been in private practice in San Clemente since 1975. He has specialized in family, business, real estate, probate and corporate litigation.
