Richardson Likely to Be Reinstated Monday

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — All-Star guard Micheal Ray Richardson will probably be reinstated by the New Jersey Nets on Monday but will have to meet weekly with drug counselors and every other day with NBA officials.
The 30-year-old Richardson also will be required to submit to drug testing.
Richardson, released Thursday after two weeks of treatment at a California drug abuse center, will meet with Net Coach Dave Wohl on Monday. Richardson met Saturday with Lewis Schaffel, the team’s executive vice president; Gary Bettman, NBA general counsel, and Charles Grantham, Richardson’s agent.
Richardson’s most recent drug episode was considered by the league to be his second. He has had others, but they occurred before the league’s drug policy went into effect so were not counted as offenses. Under league rules, a third drug offense mandates at least a two-year suspension and the possibility of a lifetime ban.
