They opened the doors of North Carolina’s $33.8-million Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center Saturday, but Steve Hale came in the back way.

Hale scored a career-high 28 points and Brad Daugherty added 23 as the top-ranked Tar Heels disposed of No. 3 Duke, 95-92, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game before a capacity crowd of 21,444 at Chapel Hill, N.C.

During a timeout, North Carolina unfurled a banner that read: “Dean’s Dome--The Tradition Continues.” The Tar Heels picked up where they left off at Carmichael Arena, where they posted a 169-20 record in 20 1/2 seasons.

The 6-4 Hale started the second half with a steal and a layup, then shook loose for three back-door layups as North Carolina (18-0, 4-0) went on a 16-5 run for a 64-48 margin.

“They were overplaying us,” Hale said of his success on the backdoor play. “You have to give a good fake and go.”

Smith said he talked about the play with his team at halftime.

“We thought we could get those backdoor layups,” Smith said. “There was no particular reason it was Hale. It’s part of the offense, and whoever is in that position can get them.”

Despite the 16-point lead, it wasn’t easy for the Tar Heels. Duke (16-1, 4-1) was on the attack throughout the second half and made it close by scoring the game’s last seven points.

Duke had a 26-21 lead when Coach Mike Krzyzewski was hit with a technical foul after Hale was fouled going to the basket.

Hale made four free throws and the Tar Heels got the ball out of bounds because of the technical and added another basket in a 12-point run for a 33-26 lead. Even though they got close at the finish, the Blue Devils never really recovered.
