Burbank May Open Mall to Traffic

The Burbank City Council has given tentative approval to a plan that would open the city’s Golden Mall in downtown Burbank to two lanes of through traffic.

Under the $4-million plan favored by four members of the council, the mall would be opened to a single lane of traffic in each direction, with no parking allowed. The plan was approved at the council’s meeting Tuesday night.

A permanent parking structure east of the mall on Orange Grove Avenue would remain, said Larry Kosmont, community development director.

Construction to open up the mall is to start in July, with completion of the first phase expected in November. The mall has become a subject of controversy in recent years because of the deteriorating condition of some of the stores and the presence of transients along the boulevard.
