Westlake High Back Wellman Picks USC Over Colorado, Cal

Westlake High running back Gary Wellman, offensive player of the year in the Marmonte League and a member of The Times All-Valley team, will be play football for the University of Southern California.

Wellman told USC Coach Ted Tollner by phone last week that he had chosen the Trojans.

“I like the campus, the guys and the great tradition at SC,” said Wellman, a 5-9, 165-pounder.

Wellman has visited Colorado and California but has decided to forgo his trips to Stanford and Arizona.

Wellman said that he would probably play wide receiver or defensive back for the Trojans.
