A CELEBRATION OF HOLIDAY SPIRIT

A few magical moments capped “A Celebration for Billie Holiday,” a benefit performance featuring 25 jazz and pop music artists Sunday at the Vine St. Bar & Grill to raise funds to pay for Holiday’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The evening began with the magnificent pianist Jimmy Rowles delivering an unaccompanied “No More.”

Later, Rowles provided Carmen McRae with background for “Some Other Spring.”

Marlena Shaw sang “Them There Eyes,” while Ella Mae Morse employed a wide vibrato in “God Bless the Child.” Lorraine Feather and Charlotte Crossley did “My Mother’s Son-in-Law,” which Holiday recorded as “Your Mother’s Son-in-Law.”

The event reportedly raised the $3,000 needed for Holiday’s star, scheduled to be installed on her birthday, April 7, when she would have have been 71.
