Fifth-seeded Anders Jarryd opened play Wednesday in the $465,000 U.S. Pro Indoor Tennis Championship at Philadelphia by beating Californian Matt Anger, 6-2, 6-3.

Jarryd, a member of Sweden’s victorious Davis Cup team and a semifinalist at Wimbledon, kept Anger under pressure with superior ground strokes and sustained deep hitting.

In the second set, Jarryd broke through Anger’s service for a 3-2 lead. Anger, winner of the 1981 Wimbledon Junior Championship, contested the eighth game strongly, but Jarryd took the game on a service ace for a 5-3 lead. In the next game, Jarryd cashed in on his third match-point opportunity with a deep cross-court shot that Anger backhanded out of court.
