At the height of summer, local public swimming pools are coolly alive with youngsters and adults sharing splashing good times.

During the rest of the year, most public pools close, but some stay open year-round to serve a potpourri of school programs, people wanting swim lessons, dedicated lap swimmers and others who believe that swimming is not simply a summer activity.

Here are 10 Los Angeles city and county public pools that are open year-round.

Banning High School and Community Swimming Pool, 1450 Avalon Blvd., Wilmington, (213) 549-9017. This outdoor city pool is open Monday through Friday, 3:30-8 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m.; Sundays, 1-5 p.m. Admission is $1 for adults, 50 cents for children 17 and younger and 35 cents for senior citizens and handicapped people. Adult lap-swim passes are $15 for 20 swims.

The facility “is building a strong lap-swimming program,” according to Toni O’Donnell, aquatic director of the Pacific Region of the city Department of Recreation and Parks.

Fremont Swimming Pool, 7630 Towne Ave., Los Angeles, (213) 758-8065. This indoor city pool is open Monday through Friday, 3:30-8 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m.; Sundays, 1-5 p.m. Admission is 75 cents for adults, 35 cents for children 17 and younger and 35 cents for senior citizens and handicapped people.

The pool will soon be equipped to lift people into the water from wheelchairs, O’Donnell says.

Rancho Cienega Swimming Pool, 5001 Rodeo Road, Los Angeles, (213) 296-1684. This indoor city pool is open Monday through Friday, 1-2 p.m., for senior and adult lap swimming and 3:30-6 p.m. for recreational swimming and lessons. It is open only to adults Mondays and Wednesdays, 7-9:30 p.m. The pool is open for recreational swimming Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 7-9:30 p.m. Adult and adaptive swim lessons are offered Saturdays, 9 a.m.-noon. Senior adult lap-swimming hours are Saturdays and Sundays, 1-2 p.m.; recreational swimming is offered Saturdays and Sundays, 2-5 p.m. Admission is $1 for adults, 50 cents for children and 35 cents for senior citizens and the handicapped. Adult lap-swim passes are $15 for 20 swims.

Venice High School Swimming Pool, 2490 Walgrove Ave., Venice, (213) 306-7997. This indoor city pool is open Monday through Friday, 3:30-6 p.m. for lap swimming and lessons. Children’s lessons are given from 4:30-5:30 p.m. It is open only to adults from 6-9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Adaptive aquatics and private lessons are given Saturdays, 9 a.m.-noon. Focus is on lap swimming Sundays, 1-2 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. Public swimming is offered 2-5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $1 for adults, 50 cents for children and 35 cents for seniors and the handicapped. Adult lap-swim passes are $15 for 20 swims. There’s a kayak program Mondays, 7:30-10 p.m.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Park Pool, 7600 S. Graham Ave., Los Angeles, (213) 587-6314. This indoor county pool is open 1-5 p.m. daily and offers night swimming Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6-9 p.m. Admission is free. It features a covered, full bathhouse, heated showers and one-meter and three-meter diving boards.

Jesse Owens Community Regional Park Pool, 9835 S. Western Ave., Los Angeles, (213) 756-0016. This indoor county pool is open 1-5 p.m. daily and has night swimming Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 6-9 p.m. Admission is free. It has a covered bathhouse, heated showers and diving boards. Adult swimming lessons are offered evenings from 6-7 p.m.

E. G. Roberts Swimming Pool, 4526 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, (213) 936-8483. This heated, indoor city pool is open 4:30-6 p.m. and 7-9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; noon-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Weekend lap swimming is from 5-6 p.m. Adult nights are Tuesdays and Thursdays 7-9:30 p.m., with admission limited to people 18 and older. Admission is $1 for adults, 50 cents for children and 35 cents for seniors.

Echo Park Indoor Swimming Pool, 1419 Colton St., Los Angeles, (213) 481-2640. This heated-indoor city pool is open for public swimming Monday through Friday, 4:30-9 p.m., with lap swimming from 12:30-2:30 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. It is open Saturdays and Sundays, noon-5 p.m., with lap swimming from 4-5 p.m. Admission is 75 cents for adults and 35 cents for children, seniors and the handicapped.

Roosevelt Swimming Pool, 456 S. Mathews St., Los Angeles, (213) 485-7391. This Olympic-size, heated, outdoor city pool serves mostly as the campus pool for Roosevelt High School. However, it is open for public swimming Monday through Friday, 3:30-8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays, noon-5 p.m. Admission is 75 cents for adults and 35 cents for children, seniors and the handicapped.

Hubert H. Humphrey Swimming Pool, 12560 Filmore St., Pacoima, (818) 896-0067. This heated-outdoor city pool is open to the public for swim lessons, including programs for the handicapped, lifeguard training (cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid and lifesaving), scuba instruction and the U.S. Swim Team and Synchronized Swim Team, according to Charles James, city Department of Recreation and Parks director for the Valley region. The pool is also available for group rental.
