Fullerton : Cal State Forum to Key on Improving Schools

Share

Cal State Fullerton is sponsoring a public meeting this afternoon to discuss ways to improve the state’s public schools.

The free event will begin at 2 in Multipurpose Room A in the University Center building.

Focal point of the session will be a discussion of a two-year study by the California Commission on the Teaching Profession. Dorman L. Commons, the panel’s chairman, will explain major recommendations in its report, which was released last November.

Among the recommendations were that the state reduce the size of classes and change the way teachers are trained and given credentials.

Peter A. Facione, dean of Cal State Fullerton’s School of Human Development and Community Service, said the commission’s recommendations will soon become major issues in the Legislature. “There is no doubt that many of the recommendations will be introduced as legislation in our state,” he said.

A panel of civic and business leaders, educators and legislators will give their views after Commons explains the recommendations in the commission report. The audience also will be invited to ask questions.
