Coast Guard investigators picked up samples of three oil slicks off the coast between Pacifica and Monterey Bay in an effort to trace them to their source. The spills, blamed for injuries to more than 200 sea birds, were believed to have come from a ship that illegally pumped out its bilges inside the prohibited three-mile limit after leaving San Francisco Bay. Coast Guard officers said they have narrowed the search for the offender to one ship known to have left the bay at the right time and on the right course to produce the spill.
